" Here is our leading things to do staying at the Pestana Royal. You can buy a pack up at reception before 9pm for next day.
1. Stroll to the Funchal harbour starting at the front of the hotel, usually downhill a couple of miles easy walking. Lovely boardwalk. Stroll practically as far as the cable car and purchase a Giro 10 journey multi ticket each for 25 Euro total from the kiosk at the bus station. Functions on the yellow busses in the city and around. Bus 1 or 2 takes you back to the hotel
2. Cable car to Monte (about ₤ 10) one way. Visit the church on top Santa Maria. Get in the basket ride down for 30Euro for a couple. It is a blast 2 chaps speed you down in a wicker basket sled thing. After getting off walk directly down to Funchal city down the narrow streets. When you have had enough get yellow bus 1 or 2 that drops you off at the hotel.
3. Use the hotel lift to the beach turn left on the pebble beach and head to the tunnel in the cliff (open 9-6). Go through it and find a great senior prom. Lots of coffee shop offered.
4. Utilize the hotel lift to the beach again. Turn right and walk over the pebble beach to the pathway that will take you all the way to cambas fishing town. About 2 miles. Stand where Churchill painted. Great deals of reasonably priced bars with harbour views. Stroll back on the road to Funchal and get the yellow bus 1 back to the hotel. Google maps will show where it is after the cement works.
5. Book a throughout the day safari with safari Madeira in a open 4x4. West Tour. Book on the internet for 50 Euro each including pick up at the hotel. A great run around the island and over the mountains. Take an extra layer to keep warm. Take your swimmers and a towel for a swim in the volcanic pools at Seixisa (totally free however no changing facilities). Disregard the ropes that bar your entry. You get a little bit of off roadway too. Last stop is the huge cliff thing with a glass flooring. Free. All of the Safari is Fun and worth the price.
6 From hotel take yellow bus 1 or 2 to the end of Funchal then bus 31 up to the botanical gardens. The bus journey is a hoot. Motorists have nerves of steel. The botanical gardens are alright. Take the return bus back to the city.
7 Have a poolside day. Snacks and beverages are fine and dandy. Sauna is all right, just 1 jacuzzi however it has spectacular views. Drink beverages on the balcony as the sun goes down.
8 Take bus 2 or 1 to city at the end of the line visit the fish market and shops. Great deals of great eating places in the old city streets. In the main shopping area check out the cathedral. Worth 10 minutes to appreciate the interior."

" Pestana Royal is the very best hotel in Madeira. I delighted in here in this hotel more than 5 stars quality.Location is nice, environment is nice, service is nice, food is nice. Great home entertainment. Fantastic sundown viewing and swimming pool. Friendly stuffs. Want to opt for vacations once again."

" Not quite what we expected from a 5 star hotel
One week at Pestana Royal, spent for a room upgrade to a deluxe veranda space with sea view, lovely and spacious with an incredible view. Reserved plan thru EasyJet (first time scheduling a bundle with EasyJet holidays) great information by means of email prior to vacation and texts throughout the holiday about the transfer back to airport. On arrival at Funchal airport, wait of approx 45 mins for transfer to hotel, coming home we were gotten 2hr40 before flight, only 4 people on transfer minibus and back at airport in 25 minutes.
Premises of hotel well kept with a number of pools. Hotel is situated outside the centre of Funchal but there is a courtesy bus two times a day into the center. Hotel is rated as 5 star but the food is poor in our opinion, we have had better in 3 star all inclusive hotels, really limited choices (starters constantly similar salads and cold meats) and very frequently only one or 2 veggies available for night meal, almost always chips or wedges for the potato option. Exact same vegetable soup on almost every night. There was however an excellent choice of fruit, cheeses and the cakes were exceptional. Breakfast was really frustrating, trays of fried eggs prepared too far beforehand just sat there solidifying, omelettes newly prepared to buy but often not fully cooked and raw in the middle. The concerns relating to food were highlighted with reception. We also didn't like the reality that pigeons which are an issue at the hotel (they employ a man with a hawk) go into the dining-room and are flying or strolling round during meal times. Pigeons likewise seen in lounge/reception area.
Beautiful week of winter sunlight in Madeira, been enjoyable checking out Funchal on foot and in a Tuktuk. Madeira Tuktuk, scheduled with Carla near the CR7 museum, collected from hotel by Miguel who took us to lots of parts of Funchal we wouldn't have actually seen on a bus, paid at the end of the trip (EUR55 for the Tuktuk for a 90 minutes trip).
Visited Camara de Lobos (yellow bus 1) where Churchill painted, a beautiful fishing village that we could likewise reach by strolling along the promenade path from our hotel (approx 45 min walk each way) and Cabo Girao (Rodoeste bus 7 or 8, only EUR2.75 each method) to base on the glass platform (the cliff at 589 meters is one of the greatest worldwide), went on the Funchal cable car (we did a return journey, purchase tickets EUR18 each from the cable car workplace in Funchal) and then went on the basket toboggan (EUR30 for 2 people plus EUR10 for photo) from Monte down to Funchal, we caught bus 20 to Monte from Funchal and then after the toboggan, caught bus 19 back into the center of Funchal."

" Really not 5 star at all
Advertised on the booking sites as a 5 star hotel, in reality it is an exhausted 4 star at best.
Entire hotel is overdue a refit, decor is tired and chintzy.
Bar/function space location a bit odd and has a temporary feel to it. The blue/green tiles on the pillars recommend it utilized to be an indoor pool, which they have boarded over the swimming pool to develop a function space
Pools were freezing. Sauna ran out action when we went to.
Food was OK - standard hotel buffet fare. Drinks are what you anticipate for all inclusive - spirits are a bit rough around the edges. Beer is great nevertheless.
Staff were great - no complaints here.
Bottom line - Don't go expecting a 5 star hotel."
