Madeira:Madeira and Poto Santo are Portuguese islands of exotic tropical colours and bright greenery, though sandy beaches are somewhat rarer as the coastline is more rugged and beaches tend to be stony. However some places have gorgeous beeches like Prai de Machico which is on the South side close to the airport and very popular. While the Sao Martinho coast has some exclusive hotel resort complexes with beautiful beaches. You can also find small secluded bays dotted along the southern coastline of Madeira like Praira da Calheta, a large beautiful sandy bay located on the south-west coast and a great Blue Flag beach for families. Prainha (Caniçal) is a lovely secluded beach where you can simply bathe in the sun and listen to the sea. Or take a short trip on the ferry to Praia do Porto Santo located on Porto Santo island. An astounding beach with crystal waters and is a perfect place to relax. But its not the beaches which make Madeira so popular. Its the stunning tropical climate and vibrant greenery, hills, mountains, wonderful cuisine and people. Madeira has an all year comfortable temperature ranging from 15C in winter (January to March) and 20C to 26C the rest of the year. Don't expect to see much sun before 10am as it often rains late nights and takes a while for the early morning mountain mist to clear. But then subtropical Madeira glistens all day. Funchal is the capital and a fantastic place to be. Wonderfully landscaped with botanical gardens and harbour. The yearly firework displays are something not to miss. Prices in Madeira are not expensive and reasonable priced accommodation is available across the island. However, expect to pay more in the capital Funchal. Though a subtropical island, Madeira differs in that there are no dangerous bugs, animals, snakes or swarms of pesky mosquitoes making it an ideal holiday location.
