The Algarve:
Without doubt, the Algarve is Portugal's tourist hot spot. Having lived in the Algarve for seven years, I can truly say that like many places in Portugal, its a garden of eden.
The Southern coastline of the Algarve stretches for endless miles from Sagres to Monte Gordo, much of which is golden sand.
Apart from popular major tourist locations along the coastline like Lagos, Potimao, Albufeira, Quateira, Vilamoura, Faro, Tavira and Villa Nova, there are dozens of other quieter and stunning places that are absolutely amazing.
While just a few miles inland, are so many beautiful hill locations like Silves, Loule, Sao Bras, Telheiro to name a few of our favourite places. The variety of the Algarve makes it a great holiday destination whatever you are searching for. From bustling cities full of culture and all night parties to calmer historic towns where life is laid back or glorious family beach locations.
Do remember that during the high summer holiday season, many Portuguese flood to the Algarve coast as its their main holiday destination and the Algarve is packed. Many Portuguese from Lisbon own apartments and villas in the Algarve which they use for main holidays or weekend getaways. Most drive but with a high speed train from Lisbon to the Algarve, its easy access. Oh, and you will probably find there is a 'local' and a 'tourist' price for many things, so do the homework and have a fabulous time in Portugal, I know I did.
