Boating or Canal Barging Holidays
Main reasons why a boating holiday on the Broads beats a barging holiday. The Broads comprise of 125 miles of lock free waterways, which means that you can cruise all day without having to queue for hours to enter a lock or wait for hours in another lock. Locks are not easy for a first-time boater and require a degree of physical fitness. Also rivers are much wider than the canals and with that extra space, river yachts can offer a bigger space in width and height. And of course when the weather is not nice, a boat is totally enclosed whereas a barge needs to be steered from outside. While canals pass through much countryside, rivers tend to follow both countryside and through villages or towns. There's even a river that will take you to 15 miles of beautiful beaches with donkey rides, classical arcades and amusements. The Norfolk rivers also flow through some of the most beautiful countryside bursting with thousands of different wildlife species. The rivers also pass great historical sites some dating back to the 12th century and of course a friendly village pub, restaurant or shops are only a short ride away when your pilot of the boat. Some river boats are more like luxury yachts with upper and lower decks, living space and bedrooms. And of course a sun deck. On the other hand, Canal barge holidays are great for those seeking a traditional old timers style of life and escape all the ras-ma-tas of daily life. Its a very slow paced holiday where no sense of haste is allowed to exist. They are a wonderful experience but a totally different type of holiday to river boating. Traditional barges have low height and a narrow width, so internal space, although having length may feel a little constricted to some. But there is that wonderful feeling stood atop the barge tiller in one hand and a cool drink in the other. There are many quaint places to moor up and enjoy a 16th century pub or even some traditional fish and chips. |
