Holiday review of Marsa Alam:

Most people may pause, double blink, and then inquire whether it is close to Mars when you tell them you are visiting Marsa Alam, tourism there is fascinating. It is not so. Located along Egypt's Red Sea coast, it is ahead of Mars in terms of seafood, sun loungers, and oxygen.

Marsa Alam has gradually become known as the sort of place people travel to flee other tourists. Of course, this is ironic since going there makes you instantaneously part of the tourism issue you were seeking to escape. While resting on a beach so deserted it felt like I had unintentionally arrived after the apocalypse, I battled with this idea for a considerable amount of time. Three people, all of whom were also acting as though they couldn't see one another, palm trees, and azure water were present.

The sea is the primary draw here, and it knows it. People see snorkelling and diving more as a moral duty than as a fun hobby. Gently but relentlessly encouraged to put on a mask and fins and be amazed at coral reefs that seem like they were created by someone who became bored halfway through painting reality. Fish of all hues slide by with a touch of modest arrogance, as though they know you paid a lot of money to see their home.

Life above the surface goes at a slow speed that could be very disturbing if you are used to people thinking that being productive means the same as having a personality. Days flow into one another in a circle of swimming, eating, and asking yourself whether it is acceptable to have a nap before lunch. It is. The resorts are adept at inducing guilt about being spoiled and a faint sense of shame about it, a delicate balance they handle with remarkable expertise.

Marsa Alam outside the resorts is rougher around the corners and calmer. There is no buzzing nightlife or hectic tour schedules here. Instead, you find tiny towns minding their own business, endless stretches of desert landscapes, and the impression that the world is continuing rather nicely without your continuous attention. It is strangely reassuring.

Here, tourism seems more like a courteous visit than like colonisation. You get here, you appreciate the unspoiled beauty, you take care not to harm anything, and you depart with a little sunburn and a camera full of suspiciously similar images of the sea. You also go away knowing that you could likely live with a lot more saltwater, less noise, and fewer emails.

Marsa Alam is not yelling for your attention. It simply sits there silently, beautiful, while you work out why that feels so alluring. Knowing full well you will still spend most afternoons doing nothing at all, you book yet another trip and promise yourself you will snorkel much more next time. This is finally the main point.
