Holiday review of Hurghada:

One of those locations Hurghada seems like a travel agent came up with who really wanted a beach getaway. To be fair, it somewhat fits that description. Constructed for people who are weary, pale, and somewhat irritated at their email inbox, a sun-drenched Red Sea resort town is built for those who are tired. I came for the cheap sunshine, the coral reefs, and the uncertain promise that I might at last unwind. The place I found was somewhat different from what you might expect and yet precisely what you might anticipate.

Hurghada superficially presents the most natural tourism. Big hotels, better buffets, and wristbands that discreetly show how many meals you can have before leaving. Like someone cranked the saturation up too far, the beaches are ideal in a practically suspicious fashion. The sea is so clear that it seems impolite not to go snorkelling even if you are the kind of person who typically avoids fish out of mutual respect. Ironically, everything sometimes feels a little fake up on land while down there the coral reefs are actually spectacular and alive.

Hurghada's blatant touristic attitude, though, has a certain allure. No one is acting as though this is a secret treasure. The souvenir stores have taken this for granted and know you want a fridge magnet. Within thirty seconds, my friend, the tour guides will phone you, and miraculously it works. Quad biking in the desert, boat excursions to islands bearing somewhat familiar-sounding names, and spa treatments you had never heard of will all be available to you. You will respond 'yes' to items you would typically say 'no' to, largely because you are on vacation and no longer care.

Most startling to me was how readily one may transform into an odd holiday version of oneself. I started eating cake before noon, getting up early for breakfast, and viewing a day as good if I avoided reading the news. Hurghada supports this conduct. It delicately informs you that if you spend a whole afternoon floating in water and pondering dinner, nothing terrible will result.

Naturally, there is a somewhat embarrassing part to all this luxury. Here, tourism is a bubble; you are quite inside it. Booking an all-inclusive package will leave you feeling both appreciative and a little guilty at once, a feeling nobody really gets you ready for. However, Hurghada may still be enjoyed if you are respectful and aware of it, without trying to pass it off as anything it is not.

Hurghada ultimately is not about life-altering revelations or profound cultural excursions. Though you will undoubtedly make sardonic remarks about it later, it is about rest, warmth, and allowing oneself to be a tourist without irony. And honestly, occasionally you really need that.
