Holiday review of Dahab:Among those places that grab you unexpectedly is Dahab. You show up expecting to spend a few days, maybe a week, and then you find yourself explaining to your boss why "the Wi-Fi is somewhat spiritual" and why deadlines are a social creation. This is not a novel tale. Dahab survives on laid-back schedules and decent intentions.Dahab tourism is a weird, lovely combination of backpackers, freedivers, yoga instructors, digital nomads, and individuals who vehemently insist they are "not tourists" while plainly being tourists. Pretending it has no idea how lovely it is, the town rests peacefully on the Red Sea. There is no pressure to do anything fast, no pushy souvenir vendors, and no enormous resorts looming over the beach. Here, even the sea appears more subdued, as if it also has chosen to pause and reevaluate its priorities. Most guests arrive here to dive for valid reasons. People talk about the Blue Hole in hushed tones over dinner because it's well-known and a little scary. The coral reefs are so brilliant you may believe someone cranked the saturation too high. It feels a little unfair that everywhere else, to be able to snorkel right from the beach and see things people travel across the world to see. Dahab tourism, though, is more than simply what you do. It's about your stop-doing. You quit hastening. You cease tracking the time. When the wind comes along, your hair will completely not look any way you want it to, and you stop worrying about its appearance. Days are counted in sunsets, swims, and coffees. Spending evenings on pillows by the sea, talking about life with people you met three hours ago, and somehow trusting them with your strongest views about society. Dahab's popularity has a moderate irony. People come here to get away from crowds, but they end up in a really laid-back crowd doing the same thing. Laptops and unfinished books abound in coffee shops. Conversations start with "I was only meant to stay a week" and end with "so I rented a place for a month." Everyone, including the village itself, seems to be changing. Though not in a conspicuous manner, tourism has moulded Dahab. With both parties learning when to speak and when to listen, it seems more like a protracted discussion between locals and visitors. One night you can have fresh seafood, then vegan banana pancakes the next; no one sees this as conflicting. You will ultimately go to Dahab. You vow you will return. Possibly you will. And when you do, it will feel exactly the same, which is kind of the point. |
