Holiday review of Sharm El Sheikh:Sharm el-Sheikh sounds like it was created by a travel brochure writer who had used up all the vowels. You think of turquoise water, palm trees, and someone offering you a cold drink as soon as you hear the name. You have not even yet completed thinking. That image is rather true in several respects. Other methods show it is very hopeful.Like a protracted stage play in which everyone knows their part, Sharm El Sheikh's tourism is a precisely choreographed performance. The Red Sea carries the weight; it's a nearly suspicious shade of blue and full of coral reefs that would entice even those who detest swimming to go snorkelling. The fish are vibrant, assured, and not at all bothered by visitors waving about in rented fins. They truly merit a tip. Another important personality in this narrative are the hotels. They are big, passionate, and driven to keep you from ever leaving. Here, all-inclusive resorts are more of a lifestyle decision than a location to sleep. You get up, eat, swim, eat again, spend time in the sun wondering about your life choices, eat again, then sleep. Somewhere in there, you might recall you are in Egypt. Perhaps. Sharma el-Sheikh is intriguing in part because it strikes a compromise between curiosity and comfort. You have endless pools, global buffets, and entertainment teams who won't take your refusal to participate in aqua aerobics for granted. Conversely, you are surrounded by desert, mountains, and history that gently remind you this place existed long before the breakfast omelette station. Two groups define visitors here. Then there are the divers, who talk seriously about visibility, currents, and brands of equipment. Then come the relaxers, who mostly hang out horizontally and talk to each other by nodding, using sunscreen gestures, and making vague promises to do something wild tomorrow. Of course, tomorrow never arrives. A few days later, there is also a weird self-awareness that comes in. You come to understand you have journeyed thousands of kilometres to eat meals that taste just like they do at home, but warmer and served with a grin implying you should be having more fun. You wonder whether you are actually seeing the location or only a highly bright variation of a worldwide hotel blueprint. You then inspect the sea once more and determine it is perfect. Philosophical concerns may wait. Sharm El Sheikh isn't aiming for subtlety. It understands your presence and fully leans into it. Sun, sea, safety, simplicity. It turns out surprisingly well if you let it be what it is instead of what you believe travel ought to be. You depart a little more sunburned, a little more relaxed, and a little ashamed by how much you loved doing exactly nothing. And to be quite honest, that could be the most genuine sort of travel available. |
