The YS Estate originally grew sugar walking stick and logwood (a part in the manufacture of dyes) for export to Europe. In 1950 the owner of the estate branched out in to the breeding of purebred racehorses and livestock.
In 1990 the estate opened to the general public as a traveler destination. Given that opening the falls visitor numbers have been kept track of and limited to prevent the falls becoming harmed through too much foot traffic.
Found on Jamaica's South Coast near the Black River in St. Elizabeth Parish, YS Falls is relatively simple to access from locations along that coast, along with Negril. History:
The YS estate go back to the 17th century. There are two theories regarding how the estate got its name, one is that the estates first 2 owners were called John Yates and Colonel Richard Scott, by combining the initials of their surnames they came up with the name "YS Estate". Another theory is that the name stems from the Gaelic word "wyess", suggesting "winding".
