History:
The YS estate dates back to the 17th century. There are 2 theories as to how the estate got its name, one is that the estates initially two owners were called John Yates and Colonel Richard Scott, by combining the initials of their surnames they developed the name "YS Estate". Another theory is that the name stems from the Gaelic word "wyess", implying "winding".

The YS Estate originally grew sugar walking stick and logwood (an element in the manufacture of dyes) for export to Europe. In 1950 the owner of the estate branched off in to the breeding of pureblood racehorses and cattle.
In 1990 the estate opened to the public as a tourist attraction. Considering that opening the falls visitor numbers have been kept an eye on and limited to prevent the falls becoming damaged through excessive foot traffic.
