The YS Estate initially grew sugar walking cane and logwood (an element in the manufacture of dyes) for export to Europe. In 1950 the owner of the estate branched out in to the breeding of thoroughbred racehorses and cattle.
In 1990 the estate opened to the public as a traveler attraction. Because opening the falls visitor numbers have been kept an eye on and limited to prevent the falls becoming damaged through excessive foot traffic.

History:
The YS estate dates back to the 17th century. There are two theories regarding how the estate got its name, one is that the estates initially 2 owners were called John Yates and Colonel Richard Scott, by integrating the initials of their surnames they developed the name "YS Estate". Another theory is that the name derives from the Gaelic word "wyess", meaning "winding".

The YS Water Falls is located 50 miles East of Negril and 50 Miles south of Montego Bay Jamaica on the YS estate in the parish of St. Ann.
