Water Sports


What a better place to practice your favourite water sport than in the warm crystal clear waters surrounding Mauritius. From the shelter of its lagoon, calm waters and the prevailing winds blowing all year round the island is an ideal spot for windsurfing and sailing. The lagoon also offers the best conditions for some water ski action. If you want some more thrills, you can glide high above the waters with parasailing and admire the view from above. For the less adventurous, there are always the pedalos where you can float gently above the waters and coral gardens, admiring its beauties effortlessly at your own rhythm. The coastal hotels in Mauritius provide more or less all water sport facilities to their clients. Some are provided free of charge as part of basic hotel facilities but some are available at extra cost. There are also numerous private clubs scattered around the main beach resorts, which provide water sports facilities.

Golf
How about putting on an 18-hole course with the emerald green waters of the lagoon as backdrop. Mauritius offers to all golfers this type of thrill on one of the seven golf courses found in the hotels on the coastline. Two are 18-hole golf courses and the other five are 9-hole ones. There is also the Gymkana club, a private 18-hole golf course found inland in Vacoas. All provide the gear and personnel to practice your favourite sport in the best conditions.

Diving
Mauritius offers such a sight that you can too easily forget the beauties lying just below the surface of its emerald green lagoons. It is famous around the world for its coral reefs and the diversity of its marine life. Tropical fishes of all types, sizes and colours abound on the coral gardens found along the Mauritian coastline. Most large hotels and a number of diving centres around the island organise diving expeditions to explore the coral reefs and discover its splendours (beauties). Most of them also regularly hold diving courses for beginners. They are associated under the Mauritius Scuba Diving Association, which is itself affiliated to the CMSA (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques). This is to show the standard and professionalism these organisations adhere to, for the quality and security of their services towards their clients. And if you are too afraid to get wet feet, there are a number of glass-bottom boats around the island's beaches that bring you discover the wonders of the Mauritian lagoon. Another way to discover the underwater beauties of the island is the submarines. Through its glasses you can sea the luxuriant marine life unveiling itself before your eyes, within the comfort and security of these specialised vessel up to a depth of 35 metres below sea level.

Deep-sea fishing
Mauritius is one of the best spots in the world for deep-sea fishing. Blue and black marlins, sharks, sail fish, bonitos and tunas thrive in the tropical water around the island. Record catches are regularly made in Mauritius with recent ones in excess of 1300 lbs. A number of fishing clubs, some found in hotels organise deep sea fishing trips everyday. They provide to anglers modern well-equipped boats with all the amenities and security for the best deep sea fishing experience. Mauritius boasts such a reputation that every year a world class competition is organised, with anglers coming from all parts of the globe. Bookings can be made through most hotels, tour operators or by directly contacting the fishing clubs.
