The south of Mauritius has some truly georgeous beaches. Le Morne - Gris Gris - Blue Bay - Mahébourg - Riambel - Pointe d'Esny. See below for brief guide to each beach.

Beaches in the South of Mauritius

Le Morne
A section of public beach located between two hotels. Set at the bottom of the enormous Le Morne mountain, and providing a view of the lagoon, this is a spectacular location. A bit further on, past the hotels, you will find a small beach which is the meeting place for kite-surfers. Although you shouldn't swim here you can watch the kite surfers freely surf all around the lagoon. A local club offers surfing classes.

Gris Gris
Located between the cliffs at the very southern tip of the island, this beach is worth a visit for its spectacular view. Instead of a lagoon you will find wild waves. Gris Gris is the perfect location for photography and filming. There is a kiosk at the beach.

Blue Bay
A small, but very popular beach not far from the airport. It is located next to the Blue Bay Marine Park. There are benches and tables for a picnic, as well as fast food restaurants, toilets, and a police station close to the beach.

Mahébourg
A large seafront with a very large lagoon. Several times a year well-known regattas have their races here. Swimming is not possible here, but there is long promenade which provides a great view of the ocean and the surrounding islands, including the l'îlot privé de Mouchoir Rouge and the l'île aux Aigrettes (a nature reserve open to visitors). The seafront can be reached by driving through the folkloristic town of Mahébourg. The town is lighted at night and has a number of very good restaurant 2000 s offering local cuisine.

Riambel
The public beach at Riambel is a dream beach located in the south of the island. On weekends and public holidays the beach is one of the most popular starting points for locals. On all other days the beach is abandoned and you can enjoy a wonderful day in peace and quiet, aside from the sound of the sea.

Unfortunately the sea is a little wild here and there is a strong current all year round. Swimming is not suitable here, especially for beginners. If you don’t want to miss out on the swimming experience you can lie in the water on the edge of the shore and be pampered by the warm sea and the radiant sun.

Nevertheless the beach is located in a heavenly bay and the long beach is perfect for walks. The entire coastal area is particularly impressive; if you look to the North you will see it is lined throughout by green mountains.
There are sanitary facilities, small snack stands with Mauritian food, and street lights, which light up the beach in the evening and at night.

Pointe d'Esny
Located in the South East, this beach is one of the most beautiful on the whole island. The white radiant sandy beaches stretch for miles along the coast and there is an enchanting turquoise-blue Laguna. All along the beach there are private houses and holiday homes. Nevertheless there are several hidden passages enabling you to reach this wonderful beach. However the beach offers no shade and has no snack stands. So it is advisable to bring a parasol and a picnic with you. The clear water of the Laguna is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Swimming and splashing is suitable here, even for children. In the winter months, from June till August, there are perfect weather conditions for kite surfers here.
