Beaches in the East of Mauritius
Trou d'Eau Douce
This small village at the east coast is especially known for offering boat trips to the neighbouring islands, such as Ile aux Cerfs. Visitors meet at the at the main pier, located near the ruin of an old limekiln, in the heart of the village. Swimming is possible at the neighbouring beaches which offer a panoramic view of the main hotels of the region.
Belle Mare
This is one of the widest beaches of the island. It is usually exposed to the wind, but in summer it is very comfortable. Basic infrastructure has been arranged by the local authorities. Safety is ensured by regular patrols. The small, shallow bays make it possible to swim all along the beach. This beach is ideal for runners who are looking for wide space and fresh air. There is a theme park not far from the beach.
Roche Noires
The public beach at Roche Noir is particularly worth a visit with its breath-taking scenery over the black lava stones and the dark, rougher sea, whose small waves break over the nearby coral reef. It is windy all year round here, which is wonderfully refreshing during the extremely hot summer months. Swimming is not suitable here; but to cool off you can always treat your feet to a paddle. It is a great place to search for shells; if you look carefully enough you will find several interesting and beautiful shells. Around Roche Noir there are several holiday homes which are located directly on the beach. There are wonderfully white sandy beaches with a turquoise-blue Laguna, which is protected by the upstream coral reef.
Poste La Fayette
Poste Lafayette is one of the preferred swimming locations, especially in the warmer months, because of the fresh prevailing winds which are present all year round. The Lafayette shoreline is lined with Casuarina trees, which bow under the strong winds, presenting a really unique view. The public beach at Poste Lafayette is one of the most beautiful beaches, with an adjacent turquoise-blue Laguna, with shallow waters; ideal for children who want to swim. Surprisingly the area is very reserved – very few observers share in the beauty and tranquility of this location. |
