There are 2 theories as to how the estate got its name, one is that the estates initially two owners were called John Yates and Colonel Richard Scott, by combining the initials of their surnames they developed the name "YS Estate". Another theory is that the name derives from the Gaelic word "wyess", meaning "winding".
