Holidays in St George explored

A short stay in St George

St George in Utah should rank on your shortlist, if you are looking for a place that feels like a good escape without needing to travel twelve hours or a total loss of your way of life. St George, located in the south-western part of Utah, is quietly becoming one of those places that you can just hit three or four days of relaxing and feel as if you’ve really rested. The red rock scenery does most of the heavy lifting, of course, the town has a vibe of chillness that’s not pretentious or overly polished and makes taking a short break down here really feel fun. One of the most incredible things is how accessible outdoor adventure is. You don’t need to be an ultramarathon runner or have a three-thousand-dollar trekking bag to appreciate what’s around you. Snow Canyon State Park is really in the backyard of the city, offering trails that snake past lava flows and towering sandstone cliffs. A morning trek there from walking and walking and then a lazy afternoon by the pool, is the sort of rhythm that seems to come with the territory after about twenty-four hours. Then there’s Zion National Park, which is only about forty-five minutes away. Even a partial day trip to Zion, perhaps just walking the Riverside Trail or raising your arm and gazing up at the canyon walls, adds another layer of scale and wonder to a brief vacation. For golfers, the courses of the land here are probably quite scenic: fairways carved through desert landscapes that look pretty much on a postcard. Even when selecting a place to stay, St George is surprisingly adaptable. At the luxury end, you have the Inn at Entrada, a private casitas resort community facing red rock formations that appear to glow at sunset. Similarly, in the city center, there are also hotels selling high-end amenities for visitors who want spa treatments, fine dining and a plush bed after spending a day exploring. But the city is just as friendly to budget travellers. Standard chain hotels are plentiful and competitively priced, and there’s a good variety of vacation rentals where you can cook your own meals and spread it out a bit. If you are the camping kind, the state park and near BLM land provide homes where you wake up to nothing but silence and a sky of stars. Whether you’re splurging or saving, the experience doesn’t seem watered down. What makes St George so fascinating is the cultural weave beneath the surface. Starting in the 1860s with Mormon settlers who were missionaries sent to the desert by Brigham Young to farm cotton, the city has a long history, and you can still taste it in the city's buildings and the way it looks. The St George Temple and the Tabernacle aren't only religious edifices; they're landmarks of human endurance in the face of hostility. The city has become very diverse and has expanded a lot over the past few decades. Retirees from throughout the country, outdoor-loving patrons and remote workers have all filtered into the city, adding a variety of perspectives, restaurants and community events. That strong neighbourly spirit is still a hallmark of much of Utah, but there is also a more cosmopolitan undercurrent than most outsiders expect. The food scene captures that transformation. You got a solid breakfast burrito from your local Mexican place, you can start your day out because the Southwestern influence here is real and good. Lunch might deliver an unexpectedly great sandwich from a downtown cafe, and dinner may transport you anywhere from a steakhouse serving beef sourced locally to a more recent establishment at the intersection of regional American cuisine and authenticity. It is not a world foodie capital; it does not fawn over its name, but the honesty of the food complements the honesty of the landscape. It’s a place where meals here usually taste as if they were put together by men who intend your meal to leave you full, happy, and not just dazzled by the plating technique. There’s a time in a St George holiday that creeps up on you, at some point, you could even steal your attention. You may have taken off and just sat on a patio near the city centre, watching families walk between shops and restaurants, with the evening light making the cliffs pink. There’s nothing chaotic about the area, not by a long shot, but even in these busier areas, with people bustling along, talking, living their lives, you have this kind of stillness. It is the juxtaposition that achieves it. You are among people again, but the memory of that greatness lingers. It helps you realise that a few days out shouldn't be about doing nothing or doing everything. It can just be slowing down internally — to match the environment you are in. That is the true advantage of a short stop in St George. You come for the national parks and the golf and the sunshine, but when you go on out, with a whisper. A quick reminder that you don't have to fly halfway around the world in order to find time for breathing. A few days in the desert, sometimes, amidst red rocks and good food and people who nod hello on the street, is enough.
