History of Lisbon:
With a multi layered past spanning more than 3,000 years, Lisbon, Portugal's capital, has a rich history.

Period of Ancient Rome
The Phoenicians founded a commercial centre called Alis Ubo, which translates as Safe Harbour, at the modern Lisbon location around 1200 BCE.

Lisbon (also known as Olisipo), under Roman control, was integrated by 205 BCE. Linked to trade routes, it grew to be a wealthy city with Roman infrastructure including roads, baths, and an amphitheatre.

Period of medieval
Muslim Moors conquered Lisbon in 714 CE, transforming it into an important Islamic world metropolis. They affected its architecture and culture by strengthening the city.

With assistance from Northern European crusaders, Christian armies under Afonso I of Portugal conquered Lisbon in 1147. Reconquista: It grew to be a major Christian bastion.

Golden Age: 15th–16th centuries
Lisbon grew into one of the richest cities in the world during the Age of Discovery. It was the launching ground for adventurers like Vasco da Gama and a center for worldwide commerce in spices, gold, and slaves.
The city developed fast into a centre of culture, finance, and royal governance.

Reconstruction and Earthquakes (1755)
On November 1, 1755, a big earthquake killed tens of thousands in Lisbon, followed by a tsunami and fires.

With contemporary urban planning concepts and earthquake-resistant building techniques, the Marqus de Pombal oversaw the reconstruction of the city.
Political upheaval in Lisbon in the 19th and 20th centuries included the collapse of the monarchy in 1910 and decades of dictator under Salazar.
Peacefully ending totalitarian rule and re-establishing democracy was the Carnation Revolution of 1974 where not a shot was fired.
