Málaga Holiday in Costa del Sol:If you were looking out through the glass of the rain-washed house in February, hoping your dream would also include a place where umbrellas are used for shade rather than for survival, Málaga might just be calling your name. Staged on Spain’s Costa del Sol, it’s a city that’s simultaneously comfortably chilled and annoyingly photogenic. It’s like Málaga took a look round Europe and decided to be everyone’s happy place. You get there, finally, just a little dazed from the flight, and at least, perhaps, already regretting you wanting to wear jeans on the plane. It’s a warm, perfumed wall of air, sunshine, sea breeze and a bit of balm, something to catch a strand of sunscreen from someone who packed better than you did. Despite its reputation, Málaga's airport is impressively efficient. You’re taken into a taxi in a short time, whose driver, depending upon the time of day, might treat the road as a racetrack or other leisurely scenic path. The city itself is like the Mediterranean’s reply to that friend who always seems perfect in every photograph he takes without ever bothering to look. Cobbled lanes roll through the old town, flanked by tapas bars that seem to multiply every time you blink. Each insists its patatas bravas are “the best in Málaga,” but after three days’ worth of hard-won research, you'll understand that it’s a lie as well as public service. There’s something almost heroic about the relaxed ease it feels. The locals are not rushing; they are sauntering. Not even the pigeons seem bothered. You, on the other hand, are tourist, so you’ll walk twelve miles before lunch, trying to “make the most of the day.” Eventually, the heat will do you in on a little bit of humility at a café, where you’ll order an iced coffee and stare into the distance, grumbling something about “slowing down to the local pace.” Málaga’s beaches are friendly along the coast, and you’ll soon find yourself partaking (for sure) in the great British tradition of underestimating the sun. In fact there’s a special sort of irony with slathering on SPF 50 when going to your hotel only to return to it looking like a kind of lightly poached lobster. Even so, with the Mediterranean lapping at your toes and a cold tinto de verano in hand, you’ll say it’s “just a bit of colour.” For a little culture, you can’t miss the Picasso Museum. For sure, Málaga is one proud of it, and if you make your way through his early work, you might find yourself saying, “I could have done that.” Spoiler: You couldn’t. A brief climb uphill finally brings you to the Alcazaba, an imposing fortress with a stunning view, which in many cases makes the climb worth it if you stop off halfway and try to act like you’re just enjoying the landscape rather than catching your breath. Evenings of life in Málaga become the city's magic. Locals spring up like clockwork, a roar of laughter fills restaurants and the smell of grilled sardines wafts down the promenade. You’ll eat too much, drink just enough and for just a moment think whether you could just stay forever. And your return flight comes back with reality. But as you pack the sandy flip-flops and half-finished bottle of aftersun, you will realise that Málaga has not just offered you a holiday. It’s served you a little sun-soaked reminder that life doesn’t always have to be speedy or cool or complicated. Sometimes, it’s just tapas, sea breeze, and the odd peeling patch of skin. |
