About Milton Abbas

Milton Abbas is not just another picturesque village; it has a fascinating history that sets it apart. The village, as it stands today, was the brainchild of Joseph Damer, Lord Milton, who later became the Earl of Dorchester. In the late 18th century, Lord Milton decided to relocate the existing medieval village to enhance the aesthetics of his estate, Milton Abbey. The new village was meticulously designed by the celebrated architect Sir William Chambers, with landscaping by the famous Capability Brown.

The entire medieval village was moved out of sight from the abbey, with its inhabitants rehoused in the newly constructed thatched cottages lining what is now the main street of Milton Abbas. This ambitious project resulted in the creation of one of England's earliest examples of a planned village, with uniform Georgian-style cottages that remain a defining feature of Milton Abbas today.

Milton Abbas is renowned for its distinctive and harmonious architecture. The village consists of a single, wide street flanked by a row of identical white-washed cottages, each with thatched roofs and neatly trimmed gardens. These charming homes, with their period-appropriate features and delightful symmetry, create a striking and cohesive aesthetic that transports visitors back to the 18th century.
At the heart of the village stands St. James Church, a beautiful structure that dates back to the same period. The church, built to replace the medieval parish church that was demolished during the village's relocation, adds to the historical ambiance of Milton Abbas. Its simple yet elegant design complements the surrounding cottages and underscores the village's rich heritage.

Beyond its architectural allure, Milton Abbas is also surrounded by the natural beauty of the Dorset countryside. The village is set amidst lush, green hills and ancient woodlands, offering a tranquil environment that is perfect for leisurely walks and outdoor activities. The nearby Milton Abbey and its grounds provide a particularly scenic backdrop, with landscaped gardens and parkland that are ideal for exploration.
The Abbey itself is a magnificent structure, originally founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 10th century. Although much of the abbey was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 14th and 18th centuries, it retains an air of historical grandeur. The abbey's grounds include a lake and various walking trails, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the area.

Milton Abbas is not just a static historical site; it is a living village with a vibrant community. The village hosts several events throughout the year, the most notable being the Milton Abbas Street Fair, held biennially in July. This event celebrates the village's unique heritage with traditional crafts, music, food, and period costumes, attracting visitors from near and far. Local pubs and tearooms offer a taste of Dorset's culinary delights, with hearty meals and homemade treats that are perfect for enjoying after a day of exploring. The community spirit is palpable, with residents often participating in local activities and warmly welcoming visitors to their picturesque village.
Milton Abbas promises an unforgettable experience. Its story, etched into the very fabric of its streets and buildings, invites you to step back in time and savor the timeless charm of this extraordinary village.
