Exploring Tirana

Ever thought your travel plans were a bit boring, you know, another perfect postcard city with clean sidewalks and souvenir shops that all look the same, then Tirana could be the fun surprise you didn't expect. Albania's capital seems like someone pushed the button out of curiosity after mixing colour, disorder, warmth, and a dash of Balkan mystery into a blender. The outcome is very endearing. And frequently amusing. And other times contradictory, yet in a pleasant manner.

First, let's talk about the colours. Tirana wholeheartedly embraced the gag. As if the city collectively woke up one morning and determined life was too short for beige, entire buildings are painted in vivid patterns, stripes, or geometric designs. Walk through the main areas, and you'll be smiling at no one in particular since something about a neon green apartment block seems delightfully unfazed by the view of the world.

The heart of the city is Skanderbeg Square, an ample open space that seems to be there mostly to make you feel small in the grand scheme of things. Warm-colored, important-looking buildings frame it, and usually, at least one youngster riding a scooter with the assurance of a skilled stunt performer is zooming around. From here, you may enter the National History Museum, whose facade features a large mosaic that makes you feel as though you are about to embark on a heroic adventure. The stories within are intriguing and occasionally a bit depressing, but they are worth your time.

If you want something more contemporary, head to Blloku, the hip neighbourhood formerly reserved for communist elites. These days, it's brimming with vibrant cafés, cocktail bars, boutiques, and people who look better than you even when they insist they don't try. Get a coffee at any of the countless cafés and get ready to wonder about your own caffeine tolerance. Coffee is essential to Albanians. You might go from Tirana with a tiny espresso habit. Think of this as a token of culture.

The Dajti Express cable car is a quick getaway from the city noise for a change of environment. It takes you up Mount Dajti, where you can peer down over Tirana and feel for a little bit like you are in one of those motivational travel commercials, but without the faultlessly groomed hair. Still, the perspective is striking even if your wind-battered snapshot is not.

Tirana's friendliness is among the city's nicest features. Visitors who are unfamiliar with proper pronunciation are warm, inquisitive, and sometimes amused by locals. They will still make you happy, smile at you, and sometimes suggest restaurants for meals you will never forget for a surprisingly small price.

Tirana is not cleaned. It's not seeking Paris or Rome. That is what makes it memorable: it is busy, vivid, and full of contrast. Approach with humour and curiosity, and you will go with anecdotes you cannot wait to share.
