The hippopotamus is a large mammal found in the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. It is one of the most popular animals to see while on a safari in this area. The hippos are most active during the day and spend their time in the rivers and lakes of the Masai Mara Reserve. Hippos are very large animals, weighing up to three tons and measuring up to four meters in length. They have thick, gray skin that helps keep them cool in the hot African sun. Hippos have large jaws with sharp incisors and canines which are used for fighting and foraging. The main diet of hippos consists of grasses, aquatic plants, and fruits. They also feed on smaller animals such as fish and snakes. They can stay underwater for up to five minutes and can go up to two days without eating. Hippos live in large groups, known as herds. The herds are usually led by a single male. The males are very territorial and will fight with each other to defend their territory. Females and their young form smaller groups of up to fifteen individuals. Hippos are very social animals and enjoy playing in the water, wallowing in mud, and grazing in the grasslands. They are also known to be quite noisy and can be heard from miles away. The Masai Mara Reserve is home to many hippos and is a great place to observe them in the wild. A visit to the reserve will give you the chance to see these majestic animals up close and learn more about them. |
