Galway is your answer if you have ever pondered what it would be like to meander around a place that appears to live somewhere between a postcard and a folk song. Tucked along Ireland's west coast, this small town has a way of making even the most seasoned visitor doubt all of their life decisions up to this point. This is the kind of place where you believe you came for the views, but wind up staying for the music, the craic, and the sheer energy of individuals who seem to appreciate life a little more than they probably should.

Begin with the evident. Eyre. Galway's beating heart is Square, and it's most likely where you'll first try to locate a quiet place to get your bearings and then most likely fail. Buskers, visitors snapping dubious selfies, and locals who seem to have been here since time immemorial and maybe will be here long after you have gone fill the square. From there, it's a quick stroll down Shop Street where the shops are charming, the aromas are alluring, and the urge to purchase another pair of woollen socks you truly don't need is quite genuine.

Galway is renowned for its street music, certainly. You can walk around, and within five minutes you will be serenaded by a fiddler, a guitarist, and a singer whose voice makes you briefly wonder why you ever thought your shower performances were acceptable. Whether you like it or not, the city has a habit of making you feel like you are part of a continuous performance. Unless you're ready to become the entertainment, try not to participate. But really, no one would judge too harshly.

Then there is the food since every trip to Galway is incomplete without overeating. Seafood here is nearly a religion. Fresh from the local coast, oysters are prepared with such pomp and circumstance that one might almost expect the waiter to deliver a blessing before giving them over. And pubs—oh, the pubs. Some pubs have enough banter to cut with a knife and Guinness flows like a small river. Pop in for a beer, stay for the chat, and leave feeling like you have found lifelong friends even if you only spent twenty minutes talking to a stranger about sheep farming.

A brief bike or bus trip transports you to the shore if you need a respite from the metropolitan activity. Salthill Promenade, featuring several small sandy and pebbly coves Take, thoughtful walks when you can stare at the Atlantic and act as though you're having a life-changing enlightenment are exactly what Promenade is ideal for. Alternatively, you may simply eat an ice cream while trying not to be carried away by the wind, which in Galway is practically a sport.

Few cities can strike the mix of charm and anarchy Galway offers. Like a buddy you can't live without, it's artistic, loud, friendly, and sometimes irritating. Most importantly, you'll leave having experienced a city that refuses to be anything less than itself; you'll also leave with images, memories, and maybe at least one dubious purchase. Galway steals your heart and then vanishes, leaving you wondering why you ever believed other cities were fascinating in the first place in a world where most locations are attempting a little too hard to be unforgettable.
