Leopard stalking Impalas on safari in Kenya

Leopards are one of the most feared predators in the African savanna, and they are known for their ability to ambush their prey without warning. One of their favorite tactics is to stalk Impalas, a type of antelope.

Leopards use their camouflage to blend into the background, allowing them to get close to their prey without being noticed. They move slowly and quietly, often downwind of the Impalas, to remain undetected. When a Leopard is close enough, it will launch a sudden attack, often from a tree branch. This allows the Leopard to pounce on its prey from above, minimizing the risk of injury to itself.

Leopards are skilled in their ability to track and pursue their prey. They have an excellent sense of smell, and can pick up the scent of an Impala from a great distance. They use their sharp eyesight to spot the Impala in the tall grass of the savanna, and their powerful legs to give chase.

The Leopard’s stalking technique is an impressive example of the predator’s hunting prowess. Although Impalas are usually able to run faster than the Leopard, the Leopard’s stealthy approach gives it the advantage it needs to catch its prey.
