Deep in the Kenyan coast, a small fishing village of Mombasa was home to generations of fishermen. Every morning, the local fishermen would take their boats out on the shoreline, setting out their nets and hoping for a good catch. The waters of the Indian Ocean were teeming with life and the traditional fishermen used simple equipment to catch the fish. They used long bamboo poles to pull in the nets, sometimes assisted by small motorboats. The nets were then emptied and the fish were sorted and sold. But times have changed and the traditional methods of fishing have been replaced by motorised boats and high tech equipment. The fishermen have had to adapt to the modern world and the waters of the Indian Ocean are now overfished. In order to keep their livelihoods, the fishermen of Mombasa have had to find new ways to make a living. Some have turned to tourism, offering boat rides and fishing trips to visitors. Others have switched to aquaculture and are cultivating their own fish farms. But despite the changes, the fishermen of Mombasa still remain true to their traditions. They still go out onto the shoreline every morning, setting out their nets and hoping for a good catch. The sun rises over the Indian Ocean, casting its light on the fishermen of Mombasa and their way of life that has been around for generations. |
