Finding Your Feet in the City of Churches

If you tell a Melburnian you are heading to Adelaide, they might give you a polite, pitying smile. Do not let them fool you. While Sydney has the bridge and Melbourne has the "laneway" obsession, Adelaide has something arguably better: a sense of calm that doesn’t require a yoga retreat to achieve. Known as the 20 minute city, it is a place where you can actually get where you are going without losing your soul to gridlock.

The Morning Ritual: Central Market
Start your day at the Adelaide Central Market. It has been around since 1869, and walking through it feels like a warm, chaotic hug. It is a sensory overload of pungent cheeses, towers of organic sourdough, and stallholders who actually want to chat. My personal strategy is to aim for a coffee at Lucia’s Fine Foods and inevitably leave with three kilos of produce I did not know I needed. Look out for the "Mushroom Man"—yes, that is his actual title, for some of the best fungi in the Southern Hemisphere.

A Walk in the Park (Literally)
One of the quirks of Adelaide’s design is that the entire city centre is wrapped in a giant green "doughnut" of parklands. It means that no matter how many emails you are avoiding, nature is only a five minute walk away.

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is the crown jewel here. It is home to the Bicentennial Conservatory, which looks like a giant glass spaceship that landed in a rainforest. If you want something a bit more zen, the Himeji Gardens on South Terrace is a hidden pocket of Japanese tranquility. It is the perfect spot to sit and reflect on why you haven't moved here permanently yet.

Culture and Coastal Vibes
For the sports fans, the Adelaide Oval is widely considered one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world. Even if you find cricket as exciting as watching paint dry, the "RoofClimb" offers a perspective of the city that is genuinely breathtaking.

As the sun begins to dip, hop on the tram to Glenelg. It is the quintessential Adelaide seaside experience. You can walk the jetty, grab a bag of fish and chips, and watch the sunset over the Gulf St Vincent. If "Gully" feels a bit too crowded, take a short stroll up to Henley Beach. The square there is packed with vibrant bars and some of the best gelato you will ever encounter.

The Liquid Gold
You cannot talk about Adelaide without mentioning the wine. You have the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale practically in the suburbs. If you only have time for one quirky stop, visit The Cube at d’Arenberg. It looks like a Rubik’s Cube that has been partially solved by a giant, and the wine inside is just as complex.

Adelaide might not shout as loudly as its coastal cousins, but that is its secret weapon. It is refined, delicious, and just the right amount of weird. Just don't tell the Melburnians; we’d quite like to keep the lack of traffic to ourselves.
