Finding Your Feet in the City of ChurchesIf you tell a Melburnian you are heading to Adelaide, they might give you a polite, pitying smile. Do not let them fool you. While Sydney has the bridge and Melbourne has the "laneway" obsession, Adelaide has something arguably better: a sense of calm that doesn’t require a yoga retreat to achieve. Known as the 20 minute city, it is a place where you can actually get where you are going without losing your soul to gridlock. The Morning Ritual: Central Market A Walk in the Park (Literally) The Adelaide Botanic Garden is the crown jewel here. It is home to the Bicentennial Conservatory, which looks like a giant glass spaceship that landed in a rainforest. If you want something a bit more zen, the Himeji Gardens on South Terrace is a hidden pocket of Japanese tranquility. It is the perfect spot to sit and reflect on why you haven't moved here permanently yet. Culture and Coastal Vibes As the sun begins to dip, hop on the tram to Glenelg. It is the quintessential Adelaide seaside experience. You can walk the jetty, grab a bag of fish and chips, and watch the sunset over the Gulf St Vincent. If "Gully" feels a bit too crowded, take a short stroll up to Henley Beach. The square there is packed with vibrant bars and some of the best gelato you will ever encounter. The Liquid Gold Adelaide might not shout as loudly as its coastal cousins, but that is its secret weapon. It is refined, delicious, and just the right amount of weird. Just don't tell the Melburnians; we’d quite like to keep the lack of traffic to ourselves. |
