Exploring Faro:

Faro, the southern Portuguese Algarve's capital, is a fascinating fusion of great scenery, amazing architecture, rich history, and beach. See our list below for spots and activities outside lounging on the sandy beach:

1. This lovely archway takes you inside Faro's historic core, where vibrant structures and cobbled lanes provide a fantastic oldy world ambiance.
Beautifully combining Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque forms, Faro Cathedral (Sé de Faro) sits in the centre of the Old Town. It sits where an ancient Roman temple once stood.

2. Natural Park of Ria Formosa
An amazing coastal lagoon ideal for birdwatching, hiking, and motor trips. It offers amazing views and is a paradise for wildlife especially migrating birds.

3. Igreja do Carmo (Chapel of Bones)
Famed for its Chapel of Bones, this church displays the remains of monks arranged in an exquisite and somewhat creepy way. Faro's past is seen through this historical site.

4. Faro Marina
A beautiful place to sit back, sip a drink, and see boats go by. Being close to the Old Town, the marina is ideal for a stroll around after seeing the historical sites of the city.

5. Housed in a former convent, this museum highlights the city's intriguing Roman-era history up to the present day. There are exquisite archaeological displays and discoveries in the museum as well.

6. Cacela Velha
Beyond Faro, some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve can be found; the historic Cacela Velha fortifications offer amazing vistas of the coast.

7. Faro Island: Ilha de Faro
Reachable by boat, this island has beautiful beaches, clear waters, and a great getaway from the metropolis. It's wonderful for seafood, sunbathing, and swimming.

8. Farro's Culinary Landscape
Make sure to sample some regional seafood recipes such cataplana (a seafood stew) or amêijoas à bulhão pato (clams in garlic and cilantro). The city also boasts several charming restaurants serving local cuisine and small cafés.

9. City Walls of Faro
Stroll along the city's historic walls dating from Roman and Moorish times. They offer excellent city and surrounding area vistas.

10. Faros' Nightlife
Although Faro is more relaxed than other Algarve cities, there are still lots of energetic pubs and cafes to enjoy. Many people go to the Rua do Prior for a drink and some people-watching.
