Klaipeda is not that big but Lithuania's second largest city and a popular port town often visited by cruise ships. Long unspoilt sands and dunes makes a great adventure then relax in the authentic cafes down the cobbled streets. Or visit the Sea and Dolphinarium Museum and a must is the ferry trip to Smiltyne or Nida and laze under the pine trees on long sandy beaches. Read our guide below.

Klaipeda is the kind of place you come hoping for a sleepy port town and instead find a wonderful mix of old-world architecture, half-timbered houses, sea breezes, and a fantastic number of sculptures that appear to have been placed around town by someone who got just a little too enthusiastic with municipal permissions. You turn a corner and boom, there's a dragon. Turn another, and a little mouse is waiting for your wishes. The art scene in Klaipeda could best be called "Why not?" Given that the Baltic is not known for warmth, it is surprising that the Old Town itself feels like a warm Baltic embrace. Cobblestone roads meander past cafes that seem especially made for those who tell themselves they will sit for five minutes yet always remain for an hour, through courtyards and past. Get a regional beer or coffee and savour the regular pace of ships entering the port. Klaipeda is hardworking yet knows how to unwind. A regular here is the Sea Museum and Dolphinarium. Indeed, it is a tad touristy. You'll probably wind up seeing the dolphin show even if you insist you're too sophisticated for such things. Yes, and you will most definitely enjoy it, especially once you understand that dolphins are essentially the stand-up comedians of the ocean. But the real treasure lies across the quick ferry trip to Smiltyne, where the Curonian Spit unfolds like a lengthy, sandy dream. Picture long beaches, pine trees smelling like summer itself, and dunes rising sharply like someone cranked Lithuania's sandbox settings up to maximum. If you want to tell people you found a beautiful coastal paradise before it gets too well-known, Nida, which is lower down the spit, is the place to go. Like the friend who invites you to a party, then quickly shows you where the goodies are, Klaipeda is the gateway to all of this. One of Klaipeda's underappreciated delights is its walkability and bike-friendly nature. You can bike like a local, stroll along the Dane River, stop to pet any dog that will accept your excitement, or rent a bike and ride to the beach. Here, everything seems simple, as though the city is softly coaxing you to be for a while and stop rushing. Although Klaipeda might not demand notice, this is precisely its superpower. It provides history free from stress, ocean views free from disorder, and enough odd surprises to make your travel journal fascinating. If you're looking for a place to unwind, be honest, and have some understated coolness, Klaipeda is waiting. Come with an open mind and comfy footwear. |
