Reviewing holidays in Lithuania.

When you think of a summer vacation, Lithuania probably isn't the first country that comes to mind. While you may think of Tokyo's neon mayhem or beaches in Spain, let me tell you that Lithuania unobtrusively warrants a place on your trip radar. It's like that unassuming buddy who all of a sudden turns out to be really funny, intelligent, and way cooler than you would have thought.

The allure first strikes you in Vilnius, the capital. With its cobblestone alleyways, Baroque churches, and tiny cafés smelling of someone baking sweets there since the 17th century, the old town is a labyrinth. You could spend hours wandering, get somewhat lost, then stumble across an odd little art gallery tucked away in a corner not mentioned on any tourist map. And yes, you can act sophisticated and cultured while really just trying to find out which way goes back to your hotel.

The food could sway you if architecture isn't your cup of tea. The most literal sense of warmheartedness is found in Lithuanian cuisine. Cold beetroot soup, rye bread, and potato pancakes are the kinds of dishes that make you feel like you've been taken in by a caring grandma who believes you eat too little. And the rates of what? A surprising amount of sense. You can eat like a queen or king without worrying about a bit of loan.

Nature lovers, get ready. Lithuania is more than simply metropolitan beauty; it is dotted with forests, lakes, and dunes that seem so unspoiled you almost anticipate seeing a Viking leisurely passing by. I really like the Curonian Spit personally. Pine woods border this small strip of sand on one side and the Baltic Sea on the other. Climbing the dunes is essentially a free exercise masquerading as tourism, and the vista at the top begs the question: Why did you ever care, given that Instagram influencers display sunsets from Bali?

If history is your jam, Lithuania delivers without being preachy. Trakai Castle looks like something straight out of a fairytale, with swans gliding around the moat. It's so beautiful that you might even think about taking one of those awkward tourist photos with your arms outstretched like a Disney princess or prince. And the country's history, from medieval times to the Soviet occupation, gives everything a sense of depth, even if your knowledge of history is mainly limited to "Rome, Napoleon, and that one World War."

However, Lithuania's fusion of contemporary and traditional life is its finest quality. While adjacent stores offer hand-knitted wool socks you somehow didn't realise you needed, cafés are abounding with youngsters drinking artisan coffee. People are friendly and usually have a sardonic sense of humour that catches you off guard when you least expect it. Let's also be honest, it's oddly reassuring to travel to a nation where most tourists are residents in disguise.

Yes, Lithuania might not scream "holiday hotspot" on a glossy magazine cover, but that's precisely why it's great. It's charming, a little surprising, and it has a subtle way of creeping into your memory. Bring a pair of cosy shoes, a curious attitude, and perhaps some beetroot soup in your backpack if you wish to feel like a true native. You will leave wondering why you ever questioned this little Baltic jewel.
