Reviewing Ghent in Belgium

Among those cities that seem like a secret you are practically not meant to know about is Ghent. Tucked in the centre of Belgium, it has all the appeal of Bruges but without the stampede of selfie-stick-wielding visitors, making it feel like you have discovered a well-kept local secret. And let's face it, pretending you've been here a hundred times while strolling cobblestone alleys makes you feel more elegant than anything else.

Walking around Ghent is like entering a live postcard. From the imposing St. Bavo's Cathedral to the Gothic Belfry towers, medieval architecture abounds. Spending hours gazing up at these structures might help you to picture what life was like back when people were strolling about in frilled collars and fanciful hats. Personally, after spending fifteen minutes peering at the complex nuances on the façades, I came to see that I was most likely creating my own historical drama in my head.

The canals are among Ghent's delights. Yes, Bruges is famous for its canals, but Ghent's waterways are quieter and perhaps even more charming. You could take a boat tour, or, if you're feeling adventurous and somewhat rebellious, rent a kayak and paddle around the city like a local who clearly knows what they're doing. Spoiler: Most of us don't; however, the images give it a lovely appearance.

Another good reason to stay in Ghent is its food scene. Though not entirely untrue, Belgian cuisine is somewhat reductive as it mostly comes down to chocolate, waffles, and beer. Particularly proud of its vegetarian choices and something they refer to as "the city of veggies" for a reason. Try waterzooi, a creamy chicken or fish-based soup traditionally served with a mix of veggies, but now sometimes with a variety of vegetables. And indeed, the beer. Belgium's beer is really its national treasure, and Ghent has plenty of small pubs where you can enjoy a regional brew while observing the world go by.

People who appreciate art will also find themselves at home. Ghent's museums, galleries, and street art, hidden in nooks, give you the impression that you have mistakenly wandered into a cool friend's loft. Although be aware, it's easy to get lost in time at the Museum of Fine Arts, which is likely why I ended up skipping lunch and having Belgian chocolate for dinner.

Ghent evenings are ideal for aimless wandering. The calm hum of cafés, the lights reflected on the canals, and the sporadic street performers give a romantic yet not claustrophobic ambience. You could find yourself people-watching for hours or stumbling upon a little, lovely bookstore you had never even heard of. You may then ponder your life decisions and the reasons you did not simply settle here permanently as the city lights sparkle around you.

Ghent is the sort of city you stumble upon. You come for the canals, food, beer, and the strange need to feel a bit sophisticated while also a little confused; you stay for the history and architecture. It's cheerful, vivacious, and just unusual enough to make you believe you're part of something fantastical, even if all you're actually doing is trying not to fall on the cobblestones.
