Nazare background.

Once a tranquil fishing community, Nazar, a lovely town on Portugal's Silver Coast, has become among the most famous surfing locations worldwide. Situated in the Leiria region, some 120 kilometers north of Lisbon, Nazar is a must-visit for visitors of every kind as it combines stunning natural beauty, traditional culture, and modern-day adventure.

The town's great worldwide reputation is mostly based on its record-breaking waves. Some of the biggest surfable waves in the world can be found at Praia do Norte (North Beach), thanks to the Nazar Canyona, a deep underwater trench that channels and amplifies Atlantic surges. Waves surpassing 30 meters (100 feet) in height have resulted from this natural occurrence. Riding a 23.8-meter wave in 2011, American surfer Garrett McNamara established a new world record and helped to bring Nazar to the forefront. The village has evolved into a destination for viewers and large-wave surfers looking to see nature's raw force.

Nazar, though, is far more than just its surf scene. Reflected in its people, customs, and architecture, the town still has a strong link to its nautical past. Common are old women wearing the conventional seven skirts of Nazars, symbolising the seven days of the week or the seven virtues. Long-standing fishing tradition in the area is reflected in these outfits, as women would sit on the beach keeping an eye out for the homecoming of their husbands.

Each of the different regions in the city offers its own charm. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or trying fresh seafood, the Praia beachfront area is dotted with cafs, eateries, and bars. The Stio district sits just above the village and can be reached by a historic funicular railroad. From this clifftop viewpoint, visitors are shown panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the vast beach below.

Among the many cultural and religious landmarks in Stio is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazar, a place of pilgrimage and devotion. Legend says that the Virgin Mary once rescued a knight from sliding off the cliff during a foggy hunt, and the church honors this event. Serving both as a lighthouse and a surfing museum, the Forte de So Miguel Arcanjo rises spectacularly above Praia do Norte, where visitors may find information on the huge waves and the brave surfers who brave them.

Nazar organizes several cultural events all year including traditional processions, musical concerts, and food festivals. With nice people and a tempo of life that differs greatly from the intensity of the waves just off shore, the town keeps a laid-back, inviting vibe.

Nazar is fundamentally a rare combination of the conventional and the extraordinary. Its a location where old traditions coexist with contemporary sport, where the ebb and flow of the sea shapes both everyday life and outstanding accomplishments. Nazar guarantees an unforgettable Portuguese experience whether you arrive for the history, the vistas, or the surf.
