Guide to Golden Sands
One of those places you learn about from a friend of a friend who once travelled "for a quiet week" and returned with enough tales to qualify as an informal travel influencer is Golden Sands in Bulgaria. Naturally, then I had to check out what all the commotion was about. Spoiler: the bother is reasonable. Golden Sands is a peculiar but wonderful concoction of beach vacation standards, unanticipated charm, and a few moments where you catch yourself wondering, How did I find myself here, and why am I having so much fun?
Naturally, the beach is the main headline. Long, soft, and really golden, it seems like a little triumph in a world full of locales named for objects they hardly resemble. In summer, the waves are lively without really trying to knock you off to Romania, and the water is warm enough to make you question why you ever put up with the British shore. Though the effort was often ruined by someone next to me blasting Europop, most days I found myself walking the shoreline trying to look reflective and windswept.
Golden Sands also has a mix of laid-back and hyperactive energy. You can spend your morning lounging under a parasol with a cocktail that is almost suspiciously colourful, then suddenly find yourself signed up for a banana boat ride because someone shouted a discount price. It is that sort of area where good and poor decisions combine effortlessly, typically under the justification of It's a holiday, so why not.
There is a whole world of hotels, bars, and restaurants meant to keep you entertained, even if you manage to forget the sea exists when you stray outside the water and the sunbeds. Stalls selling everything from handcrafted crafts to somewhat concerning inflatable flamingos line the promenade. I purchased one. I am not sorry about anything. Food-wise, you have a mix of international dishes and Bulgarian standards, and most are moderately priced. Even if only to feel better about eating something fresh before eventually following it with a plate of fried calamari, the traditional shopska salad is worth trying.
The local nature is among the nicest surprises. The Golden Sands Nature Park, a wooded area where you can walk shaded paths and briefly fantasise that you are a calm, outdoorsy sort, is located just behind the resort. It balances the beach bars and the sporadic karaoke barrage nicely. Also, until you realise you are sweating and a little lost, the contrast makes you value the peace in a way that almost feels holy.
Golden Sands is not aiming to be luxury or elite. It is not acting like it is not something it really is. It just gives sun, sea, fun, and the odd, strange moment that somehow turns into a wonderful memory. There, you may unwind, party, or bounce about pointlessly in the sand all afternoon, and no one would condemn you.
Seek somewhere else if you want elegance. Golden Sands is waiting, whether you love it or not, if you want a vibrant seaside vacation with lots of attitude and a good helping of comedy.
