Ostend Belgium reviewed
Let me introduce you to Ostend if you have ever found yourself asking where the Belgians go when they desire sun, sea, and some salty air free from the turmoil of the French Riviera. This coastal town, hidden along Belgium's North Sea coast, resembles that somewhat quirky friend who disregards fashions yet somehow always manages to be lovely.
Ostend's primary appeal and the reason most people have trouble getting off the train from Brussels is its beach. For Belgium, which is a relief given I had anticipated gravel and regret, it is lengthy, broad, and somewhat sandy. Lying on the beach here feels almost totally anonymous. Locals, visitors, and the odd seagull with a bad attitude all appear to have mastered the skill of doing nothing very well, surrounded by you. This is, in a sense, the Olympics of lounging if you enjoy watching people.
Don't, however, believe that Ostend only consists of sand and sunburn. If you're ready to look beyond the bright beach huts, culture leaks out of every nook. Yes, it's much cooler than it sounds, the Mu.ZEE is a stylish, contemporary museum for Belgian art. As you stroll the galleries, you may marvel at the creations of local artists and question how on earth they managed to depict the North Sea with such melancholy perfection. For some historical drama, the Mercator, a decommissioned sailing ship turned museum, makes you feel like a sailor from a previous life, minus the scurvy.
Ostend's cuisine is a somewhat unobtrusive pleasure. The town realises that Belgian seafood is big business. Menus feature fresh mussels, shrimp croquettes, and fish straight from the boat so often that your waistline will be anxious. If you're not careful, you'll end up eating your body weight in fries and wondering if life can get any better than this. Ostend also boasts an unexpectedly lively café scene. Sip a nearby made beer as the sea wind messes with your hair and wonder why Belgium has somehow mastered the skill of doing both robust and exquisite at once.
It's worthwhile to stroll around even the town itself. The charm is enhanced by its broad boulevards, distinctive architecture, and the occasional statue that makes you squint and question, "Really?" It works precisely because it is not ostentatious, not excessively eager, and so forth. Ostend is pleasant because it feels lived-in rather than planned, especially in a world of flawless Instagram-perfect communities.
Though some might not view Ostend as their ideal luxurious vacation, its secret weapon is its unassuming quality. It is straightforward, a bit ragged around the edges, and naturally itself. Whether you're there for the food, the culture, the beaches, or to get away from the never-ending cycle of city life, you'll leave feeling like you've discovered a little piece of Belgian enchantment. Just don't be shocked if a nearby tells you that, yes, the sea actually is colder than it appears, and a seagull steals your lunch.
